our semester focus
food for thought
Access to sufficient, quality food is a basic human right that enables us to live healthy and fulfilled lives. Unfortunately, food insecurity remains a significant problem for many in the U.S.; in Berkeley alone, research shows that approximately 24,000 people lack consistent access to food.
In order to effectively tackle this growing issue, we need to think about sustainable, education-centered solutions. While poverty exacerbates the issue, implementing practices such as reducing food waste and buying locally can help mitigate the depletion of Earth’s resources, protect biodiversity, and combat climate change.
In order for everyone to access the basic right to healthy food, we must work together to create sustainable food systems that will benefit all communities for generations to come.

partnership
Planting Justice is a nonprofit organization that supports Bay area communities through food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing.
They strive to achieve this through food justice education at high schools, a holistic re-entry program that offers jobs to previously incarcerated individuals, and a permaculture landscaping team for urban farms and training centers.
They have a nursery in East Oakland, and a 4 acre farm and orchard in El Sobrante, CA.
